We created the Better Business Book Club to provide opportunities for peer to peer interaction, professional development, and even a little fun. Each quarter, we read a business book selected from those suggested by our members. Then we meet (virtually or in-person) over lunch in a facilitated round-table format to discuss what we’ve read and how to apply it to our professional lives. Not only do we benefit from the content, but we build and reinforce our SDA relationships.

This quarter we’re reading “Fierce Leadership – A Bold Alternative to the Worst “Best” Practices of Business Today,” by Susan Scott.  Chapter members Carol Wanda Spradlin and Judy Beebe will facilitate.

Leadership visionary and bestselling author Scott starts off this book with ”What fresh hell is this?” This book is not only information and imaginative, but she tosses in a lot of humor.  Like this sample  in the chapter on employee engagement:

“Wouldn’t it be great if we could simply mandate employee engagement, deep pleasure in the work, the quality of our relationships, with the turn of a dial?

• John, your level of engagement seems to be hovering around 40 percent.  I realize that 100 percent might be asking too much, so I’d like you to dial your engagement up to 75 percent during the next three weeks and hold it there.  Okay?
• Candy, whenever you see me coming, you slam your door and jab pins into the voodoo doll you created from crumpled memos and rubber bands.  I get the impression you don’t like me very much.  So, I’d like you to recognize that I am the finest boss you’ve ever worked for.  That’s a directive.

Other than the cost of the book – buy it here, or hit the library for a zero dollar option – there is no cost to participate, and we anticipate that attendees will earn one CEU from SDA.
